HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL!
A brand new year, definitely a brand new beginning for all of us in
My First Skool Jurong. We K1 teachers will strive and do our best for our children, especially now that the curriculum for K1 is heavier and definitely more in-depth.
In one of the lessons in the month of January, our K1 children learn about sorting.
Besides sorting using buttons, coloured magnets, coloured straws and other scrap materials, the children get to sort using real vegetables!
They observed the different types of vegetables namely mushroom, broccoli, cabbage, brinjal, white radish, spinach and lemon grass.
"Hmm. This brinjal smells unpleasant!" exclaimed Syarmayne with an expression of dislike.
Elgin: "Yu Shan, how is the smell?"
Yu Shan: "Not nice!"
Nadia: "Err... Brinjal is unpleasant."
Alvis and Helmindra seemed to like the smell of the spinach!
Now how about the mushroom. Yoke Xuen?
Norman observed the patterns on the underside of the mushroom.
"It is white, Teacher Myra!"
Hong Ze: "Eee. It feels so sticky.. I don't like..."
Amelia looked at the cabbage and seemed to love it.
Alvis, what are you looking at, dear? :)
After observing the vegetables, it was time for them to sort them into different attributes.
1. Vegetables that are long versus vegetables that are short.
2. Green vegetables versus non-green vegetables.
3. Vegetables with curves versus vegetables that are straight.
4. Vegetables that smell pleasant versus those that are unpleasant.
AND THE LIST GOES ON! :)
Hong Ze: "Hmm. Where should I place this mushroom?"
That was just a glimpse of what children always do during lessons: They learn through observing, touching and feeling the objects, hearing and sometimes tasting. And after that, they will proceed to do some worksheets provided for them and some drawing and writing 1 to 2 sentences.
Other than that, they always have fun in the learning centres! What do they do at the learning centres? Here are some pictures of the children at work:
Sun Yu Xin was independently forming her own name using the magnetic letters.
Fynn Tan was on her way to form her own name. :)
Li Xin was looking out for pictures that begin with the letter "m".
Soo Yao Dick and Ridzuan were playing "m" Bingo together.
Allen was carefully sorting the letters in to the "Uppercase House" and the "Lowercase House".
Look at how happy Li Xin was while playing Scrabble!
Jun Yin was concentrating hard while writing the lowercase "m".
Ashraff: "hmm. What other shapes can I create?"
Ai Yan and Shu Xin were playing the game called "Counting to 10".
Jayden was trying his best to pick up the wooden ball using the chopsticks.
Go Jayden go! You can do it. :)
At the "bakery".....
Chek Ee was attempting to make cupcakes using plasticine.
Ta daa!! He successfully made four wonderful cupcakes! :)
Sun Yu Xin was rolling the plasticine, making them flat. She said she wanted to make cookies.
Fynn: I want to buy this cake.
Shahirah: Oh sure! One dollar!
Jun Yin, Zhi Cheng and Ai Yan were busy painting using their own creativity.
Can you guess what was Soo Yao Dick's painting all about?
Rhyme: I am specialI am special
(colour of hair) is my hair
(colour of eyes) are my eyes
I am (age) years old
Just the right size
(name) is my name
And as you can see
