Does this song sound familiar to the children? Absolutely, all the kindergarten one children knows this song very well. But, can you guess which restaurant am I referring to? Well, I shall leave you with suspense on which restaurant that the children have visited in the month of August.

It’s none other than our trip to the Pizza Hut!

On the 11 of August 2010, our kindergarten one children had a field trip to the Pizza Hut located at Jurong Point shopping centre. We wanted the children to see how the real Pizza Hut looks like, how they cook the pizza and what ingredients they use in a pizza, the display of the dining area and the setting of the table, and the different roles of the people working in the Pizza Hut restaurant. We also want them to see the attire of staff in the Pizza Hut restaurant. With such exposure to the children, they will be able to role-play back at their own dramatic corner in class.

This field trip allows them to go into the kitchen to see the working process of making a pizza or pasta. There were waitresses assisting and facilitating the children when they were in the kitchen. They were divided into smaller groups so that they were able to listen and understand what was being told to them.

As they entered the kitchen, the waitresses showed them the ingredients available at the section and then the soup that has already been prepared before the restaurant opens.

This is the store room where you can find chicken drumlets that all of us love to eat it! All of the children commented, “Teacher Lia, very cold”. The small compartment of the store room is very cold and all the raw foods are stored in there.

Next, the children went to the station where the pizza flour is being made. The waitress showed the machine used to make the pizza dough.

She showed the dough to the children and everyone was eager to touch the dough. They cannot wait for the waitress to give it to them.

Look at Min Jie! He was smiling when he got to feel the dough.
Mei Qi and Guang Wei were busy talking among themselves and exploring the texture of the dough.

After exploring the texture of the dough, they went to the station to make pizza. The children were able to gain some hands-on experiences by selecting their own ingredients to put at their pizza. This is their favourite and exciting part of their field trip!

Having to choose their own ingredients for their pizza was really exciting and enjoyable for the children. Before they ended their learning journey in the kitchen, the waitress showed to them all the ingredients that they need for their food found in the menu. The children were got to see how the ingredients were displayed in the large compartment.

As some of the children were not able to see the ingredients, the waitress carried them. Definitely, Denise and Asri were happy to see the ingredients.

This is where pizzas and chicken drumlets were cooked in the big and hot oven.

That’s the end of their journey to the kitchen. Next, will be the dining area.
Teacher Lia asked the children what is the name of the ingredients placed at the wall. They were able to tell the ingredients as they were taught before they visited the Pizza Hut.

Teacher Lia explained to them to why there was a need to have light in the restaurant and how the waitress keyed in the customer order into the computer system.


Now, it’s the time the children have been waiting for. It’s eating time!

Things found in the classroom and home

For this month of July, children were taught on things that can be found in the classroom and home. They were asked to identify different things that they can see around their classroom through the activity of the classroom survey that they had to do in pairs. From this activity, the children learnt how to work in pairs and plan before they executed the survey. Co-operation among them also has taken place through this activity.

After identifying the things that can be found in the classroom, they were introduced to the sentence of “I found a...” and each child were given a chance to tell the teacher what they have found around their classroom using the sentence structure, "I found a..."

To see how creative the Kindergarten 1 children can be, I have asked them to paint one thing that they have mentioned previously to their teacher. The children were given a drawing paper and different colours of paint for them to paint their drawings!


Let us see how creative our young artists can be!

First, let me introduced to you to Miss Sunny and Mr Zane. Miss Sunny has drawn a flower pot while Mr Zane drew a plant. We can see that both of these artists have a same preference when asked to draw what they can found in the classroom.

Next, will be our Miss Adora. She drew a butterfly book that she found in the library corner.

Like our artist Miss Adora, Miss Chloe also drew a butterfly book.
Can we say that both of these artists love butterfly so much? We shall find out.

This is Mr Guang Wei who drew a table. He has written Wednesday on the table.

For our artist Mr Cheng Yi, he has drawn the opposite of Mr Guang Wei. He drew a chair. We need a chair for us to sit to draw on the table. That’s a good combination right? One artist drew a table, while another artist drew a chair.

Mr Nicholas and Mr Min drew a storybook and they had a picture of a bee for their front cover. At times, we can see that children have the same idea when they were asked to draw.

Different from Mr Nicholas and Mr Min, Mr Li Wei drew a toy car. He said, “I found a toy car at the block corner”.

Our artists Miss Ignes, Miss Jia Ning and Miss Ivalyn drew something that the other artists might not have seen in the classroom. When I asked Miss Ignes what she found in the classroom, she replied, “I found a picture”. For Miss Jia Ning, she replied, “I found my friends,” and Miss Ivalyn replied, “I found a bee sticker”.
Can you see that not all children really see things the same? Every child is unique in his own way just like my K1 children.

To extend what they have found in the classroom, the children were asked to draw something that they like in their classroom and they will be displayed near the library corner.

This is how it looks after they have finished drawing what they like. They like the projector, whiteboard, pencil, computer, toys, lantern and books in the classroom.
