Grow… grow… GROW…

Are you thinking of the drinking advertisement? Absolutely this is not about what I am referring to but, the month of September has also taught the children the importance of eating healthy food that helped them to grow better, be stronger and provided them with energy. As it was the Health Promotion Board week, the children were introduced to the Five Food Groups. For our kindergarten one class, I have chosen to introduce and talk more on the food that belongs to the "Bread and Cereals" group.

Let me bring all of you to the learning journey of the children in becoming healthier and stronger child…

Motto of the day: Let’s grow healthier and strong by eating more energy food!

For our Healthy Eating Week, K1 children were introduced to the Healthy Eating Pyramid where they need to identify food that belongs to the different segment of the pyramid.

In the morning, the children were first introduced to the different types of food groups found in the food pyramid. From the posters shown to them, they listened and asked questions during the lesson. It was an interactive session where teacher and children were involved in the conversation.

Children were attentive as they listened to the teacher about the diet pyramid. They learnt about the different types of food that they should eat more or less and the importance of eating food that belongs to the different segments of the food pyramid.

We have selected the breads and cereals group to learn more about the importance of eating those foods. Teacher shared with them the right serving they have to consume each day to give them more energy and helps them to grow healthy and strong.

To know whether they understood what is taught to them, teacher Lia asked one of the children which food that belongs to the breads and cereals group and why is it important that they should eat more for those foods.

We had an enjoyable session together where children got to ask teacher questions and shared what they know about the foods that mentioned. Look at how some of the children were impatient to ask questions while the teacher has not finished talking to them.

Teacher also did bring the real items like the cereal and milk for the children to see and reinforced what they already know. Haqish was able to tell that this cereal was his favourite food and further explained that this cereal helps him to grow if he always eats every morning.

After teaching them about the diet pyramid and food that belongs to the breads and cereals group, the children were asked to make 2D on their favourite food either it is for their breakfast or lunch. They were given materials such as plastic plates, sponge, straws, different coloured paints.

This is how the working in process of the kindergarten one children doing their 2D food.

Most of the children love eating bread for their breakfast daily. They love to spread blueberry jam, strawberry jam and cheese on to their bread.

While most of the children prefer bread as their favourite meal, some of the children prefer to eat cereal with milk every morning. They created their own cereal like face cereal using cotton wool dipped with different colours of food dye.

From this lesson conducted, we can also see that some of them prefer to eat pasta for their lunch besides eating rice. They were asked to create their own pasta creativity by using the variety of pasta given to them such as macaroni, fussili etc. Nicholas is making clown pasta.

Not forgetting that children do love to eat noodles too. They used strings to paint and create their own ingredients by using coloured papers to paste on to the plate. As they created the pasta, they talked among themselves on why they have chosen noodle as their favourite meal.

Next, the children were taught on the language of colours. A book called, “Elmer” by David McKnee was read to them. For this activity, the children need to sing a song called “Colours” where they need to listen carefully and when the colours that they were holding were called, they need to sit or stand. The children were really enjoying themselves. At the end of this activity, they were able to name the colours confidently and relate it to an object.
To extend this, I have asked the children to draw their own Elmer so that they would able to remember the story and the colours. You will get to see their Elmer drawn by them in their portfolio. :)

This is how the book looks like:

Title of the book: Elmer
Author: David McKee

Songs: Colours

This is a song about colours, colours, you see them all around.
There is red on a stop sign, green on a tree.
Blue in the sky and sea.
This is a song about colours, colours , you see them all around.
It’s about the happiest song in town.
All you have to do is stand up and sit down (2x)
Red stand up, blue stand up,
Yellow and green stand up,
Red sit down, blue sit down.
Yellow and green sit down,
Red stand up, green stand up,
Red and green sit down.

Besides being able to name the colours, the children learnt about mixing colours. They were given different coloured paints and a piece of white cloth for them to explore the primary colours. They have to choose two primary colours and mixed it together to get another colour which is called “Secondary colours”. Through this activity, the children will need to observe the effect of wet paint on another wet paint.

Now, it’s time for us to see our young artists at work!

Welcome the Sunshine group…

Phyusin said to Min, “I want to take red colour”. Min replied, “I shall take blue first”.

Denise was busy dipping the paint from the paper cup.

Xin Yin and Alex were creating their own shapes using different coloured paints.

Ignes was making a big heart-shaped by using red and yellow paints to get orange heart while Suzanne has mixed blue and red paints to get purple circle.

Sky was making a triangle using blue and yellow paints to get a lime green. He was excited to explore the different colours and creating different shapes.

Min Jie was making his own shape by using blue and red paints together. He has spread the paints to look like the cloud. Then, he would try to create another form of shape that came to his mind.

Welcome the Rainbow group…

I shall make square using a red paint…
I have already has orange paint for circle.

You can see how engrossed he was that he does not realize that his photo was being captured. Caught in the action! :)

Look at my beautiful butterfly that I have made!
I used red and blue paint to get a beautiful butterfly!

Chloe was creative that she has used two different coloured paints to create an object that she loved e.g. butterfly.

Phyusin was mixing blue paint onto a red triangle that she has made to see the effect while Zane has chosen red paint and he was making a triangle too.

Ivalyn has made four different shapes at the cloth and she was almost done exploring the mixing of two paints together. Chloe was finishing her last shapes which she has made a fish. Good job Ivalyn and Chloe!

Song: Why are things opaque or transparent?
(Sung to the tune of ‘London Bridge’)

If my glasses were opaque,
were opaque, were opaque.
If my glasses were opaque,
What would happen?
If our clothes were transparent,
transparent, transparent.
If our clothes were transparent,
What would happen?
If the windows were opaque,
were opaque, were opaque.
If the windows were opaque,
What would happen?
If your bag was transparent,
transparent, transparent.
If your bag was transparent,
What would happen?

Song: Rough and smooth
(Sung to the tune of “Twinkle twinkle little stars”)

Rough and smooth things I can feel.
Even though I close my eyes.
Some things are rough or smooth.
Some things are rough and smooth,
One part rough and one part smooth.
There is a reason why that’s so.
