In the month of May, our K1 children about soft and hard parts of the body. They learnt about bones, muscles and skin. A tooth is one of the hard parts and as an extension to the lesson a dentist was invited to tell children how to take care of their teeth.

Children are waiting patiently to listen to the dentist. ‘That looks like the teeth we have in our clinic,’ Nicholas is whispering to Cheng Yi.

Children are listening to a story attentively.

"What food is good for healthy teeth?" "I know," Min is anxious to answer the question.

"This is a sad tooth. It was not taken care of." The dentist explained through the story session how to have good teeth habits. Brush at least twice a day: in the morning and after breakfast, you will tend to be in a hurry, so do a THOROUGH job in the evening, taking the time to use floss and interdental brushes for those important between-the-teeth areas. This comprehensive cleaning has to be done at least once in a 24 hour period to prevent future problems with gum disease. The dentist also explained that children must be careful about what they eat and drink. Sugar feeds the bacteria in the mouth, which then excrete substances that break down tooth enamel.

"This is called the back teeth." Children were told the parts of the teeth, the back, the side and the front teeth.

"This is how you brush your teeth!"
• Brush in circles and use short back–and–forth strokes.
• Take time to brush gently along the gum line.
• Don't forget to brush your tongue.
• Change your toothbrush at least every 3 months.

Adora is demonstrating how the proper way of brushing teeth.

In conclusion to the session children sang a song about healthy teeth.

Looking Bright and Beautiful

Looking at me, looking at you.
Looking bright and beautiful.
Wonderful teeth, wonderful smile,
It’s for me and you!

Eating my food, chewing with fun.
Oh, I love my breakfast bun!

Biting my fruit, crunchy and good.
Happy when I’m done!

Chorus
Strong and healthy are my teeth.
Makes me feel so good.
Happy, smiling all the way.
Brightens up my day…

Looking at me, looking at you.
Looking bright and beautiful.
Brushing my teeth, morning and night.
Easy thing to do!

Chorus
Strong and healthy are my teeth.
Makes me feel so good.
Happy, smiling all the way.
Brightens up my day…

Looking at me, looking at you.
Bright and beautiful.

Monday, May 3, 2010

In the month of April our K1 children were introduced to different parts of my body. We started with 'head.' Children were asked to point to the parts of the head and say it.

'This is my nose.' Children are pointing to their nose.

'And this is my eyebrow.' Children were able to identify and say the words clearly.

Children were then introduced the letter ‘h’ and the ‘hhh’ sound.

Ignes is writing the upper case and lower case letter ‘h.’
Children were asked to name a body part beginning with letter ‘h.’
Zane said, ‘head.’ Teacher then asked, ‘What begins with letter ’h’ which you can use to cover your head?’ Arvin answered, ‘hat.’
Teacher took the lead and showed children how to fold a simple origami hat. Each child was given half a piece of newspaper. And scrap materials to decorate their hats.
A lot of social interaction took place as children asked each other if they were folding their hats correctly. Those completed first helped their friends to fold.

'You fold one first,' Adora is showing Ilhaqqy how to fold the corners. Arvin is trying to figure out which side to fold now.

After folding their hats it was time to decorate their hats.

Children used coloured papers, straws, feathers and ribbons to decorate their hats. They traced and cut out a lot of shapes of different sizes. Jia Ning is waiting for Cheng Yi to give her the heart shape which he cut for her.

At last their hats are ready. These children eagerly wore their hats to see what it looked like. To reinforce what children had learnt they were given a chart of head and the parts to paste accordingly.

Guang Wei is looking for the word ‘hair.’ Min says, ‘It begins with h.’ Children are seen matching the parts of the head. Chloe is practicing writing the parts of the head.

During this lesson children learnt self and social awareness through observation and descriptive investigation. Children also used expanded vocabulary and language for a variety of purpose. e.g. Jun Jie said, ‘I use my nose to smell.’
They were able to convey ideas effectively. E.g. When Zul could not figure out how to fold his paper into half Alex told him, ‘Put the paper on the floor and fold in front of you.’
