Let’s bake a birthday cupcake!
Our Kindergarten One children were going to bake cakes! Look at the row of ingredients displayed. Children were going to make their own birthday cupcakes by following the pictorial recipe chart.
Zane, Adora, Qi Xuan and Jia Ning were busy mixing the ingredients. During this process, children will observe what happens to the ingredients during the mixing process. Zane said, "It’s so sticky the butter is sticking to my spoon!.” Adora was engrossed in scooping the right amount of flour into her bowl.
Zul, Ivalyn, Chloe, Chengyi and Phyusin were scooping
the right amount of ingredients so that they can bake their best birthday cakes! During this process, children will learn to collect the ingredients in sequence. They were also able to communicate with each other for instance, Ivalyn asked Chloe, "Must I add one or two spoons of butter?” Chloe replied,” One spoon is enough!”
“Let’s see whose cupcakes turns out best!”
“At last! we can pour the cake mixture into the paper cups!” During this process, children learnt the steps of making the birthday cupcakes and the changes that were taking place.
“Our cupcakes are now ready to bake in the oven!” Children were able to make predictions about the changes that was going to take place to their cake mixture when it is baked in the oven. They predicted that the white mixture will turn ‘brown’, ‘cooked’, ‘can be eaten’ etc.
“Hurray! We have made it!”
Children were able to taste their own cup cakes, which they had for high tea.
During this whole process of baking, children were able to seek information through observation, exploration, and were able to describe their own investigations.
Children learnt the following rhyme during this baking lesson.
Bake a cake (to the tune to Pat-a-cake pat-a-cake baker’s man)
Bake a cake, bake a cake,
baker’s man
Bake me a cake,
as fast as you can
Beat the eggs, sieve the flour
and stir it well
Put it in the oven and
get ready for tea.
